What exactly is Rockin Pets?

We are the social networking site exclusively for pet lovers. Rockin Pets started in September 2010; based out of Los Angeles, CA. We aim to bring together pet lovers as well as inform the public on the issues that pets face today. Here you can search for friends, lost pets, pets that are available to adopt, pet sitters, or pet businesses. Keep checking back on our ”Gazette” for up-to-date news articles, events, adoptions, and anything pet related.

Is it free to join Rockin Pets?

Yes, basic membership is completely free.

Do I have to join to use it?

No, you don't have to join to use some of the features at Rockin Pets. Some of the exclusive benefits are available to members only.

Is there an age requirement to join Rockin Pets?

Yes, you must be at least 18 years of age to register as a Rockin Pets member.

How do I decide if I should have a Personal Account or a Business Account?

For our purposes, a personal account is for one individual person whose paid, pet-related activities are an adjunct to their life and not their primary source of income. If you have a business that is Pet related, then you are a business. Moreover, if you use any of the following: employees, specialized equipment, kennels, crates, inventory, payroll, business signs, a building other than your home, or advertising of any kind beyond business cards and hand distributed fliers, you are a commercial business for our purposes.

Are all pet-related businesses allowed to join?

No, there are petcentric businesses that in our opinion do not act in the best interest of the animals. We do NOT welcome those businesses. That would include Pet Breeders, Commercial Pet Sellers (including Pet Stores), people or organizations who train and/or use animals strictly for entertainment purposes, and veterinary businesses which perform de-clawing procedures without medical necessity.

I registered but didn't get a verification e-mail so I can't sign in! What do I do now?

Yes, unfortunately sometimes e-mail doesn't get through. Sometimes it's just slow though. Make sure you wait at least an hour before deciding it's never going to arrive and make sure you have checked all your bulk or SPAM folders in case it was delivered there instead.

It's easy to request a new verification e-mail. Click the Sign In paw in the top right corner of your screen. Then on the member sign-in page, enter the email address you used to register with and leave the password blank, and click Sign In. On the next screen in the Password Reset box on the bottom left, answer the password reset question, then click Request Reset Authorization. After a short delay a new verification email will be sent to your email address. If you have waited over an hour for your second email and still have not received it, check all of your bulk or SPAM mail folders. If it is still missing, please contact Rockin Pets at admin@rockinpets.org for help.

How do I use Rockin Pets to find and hire a pet sitter?

  1. First register as a member of Rockin Pets. Basic membership is absolutely free. If you haven't already joined, go to our Registration page, then log in after you are registered.
  2. Create a job posting describing what care you need and when you need it. You do this by selecting the Create A Job Posting button on your profile page.
  3. Go to the Search for Sitters page and enter your location and search parameters and start a search.
  4. Find the sitters that meet your geographic criterion, then visit each sitter's profile to see what information they have provided about themselves, their experience, their references, their personal details like age, sex, etc. If a sitter looks like they might be a fit for your job, click the Invite to View Job button from the Contact buttons on their profile.
  5. On the Job Invitation page, if you have more than one job posted, make sure the appropriate job is selected in the Job Description box. Selecting the Info button will show all the details including who you have already sent invitations to. Clicking the Send Invitation button send the invitation our message facility.
  6. Continue looking at profiles and sending invitations to all the sitters that meet your needs. Be reasonable. Don't blindly send invitations. Stop and read the profiles to determine whether the sitter appears qualified and interested in your kind of job before inviting them. If we catch you spamming, your profile will be removed.
  7. Sitters that are interested in your job will respond to you with a message, and premium members can also receive e-mail and text notifications. You should then interact and negotiate with the sitters who want the job, so you can decide who is best, negotiate a price, etc.
  8. When you have determined which sitter you are going to hire for the job and AFTER you have negotiated everything with them and informed them of your decision, go to their profile page and click the Assign to Job button. On the Job Assignment page, review the information and click the Assign to Job button to confirm. That's all you have to do. A confirmation message will be sent to the sitter on your behalf, and you will receive follow-up reminders in your profile alert box when the job is complete and you can enter feedback about your experience with the sitter.

Why can't I automatically invite all the sitters I found to view my job posting?

We require you to individually visit the profile of each pet sitter of interest before sending them an invitation. Many sitters will not meet your needs, and some may have no interest in caring for your particular type or breed of pet. Or, for example, a pet sitter may be temporarily unavailable for a period of time and have that information displayed in their profile. Rockin Pets is committed to allowing you to make informed choices on who will care for your pets, and to provide pet sitters with viable job opportunities, not spam. Blanketing your entire geographic area with job invitations without concern for whether the recipient is qualified or interested in getting them is not in keeping with those goals.

Why do I need to register to contact a sitter?

We require you to register (join) before you can contribute anything to the Rockin Pets site because SPAM and inappropriate comments are unfortunately the way of the world and we want to provide an environment where pet owners and sitters can interact with each other without being constantly assailed with unwanted and inappropriate intrusions. We certainly can't guarantee that your Rockin Pets experience will be 100% SPAM free. What we promise is that by restricting anonymous contributions and requiring working e-mail addresses, properly filled out forms and having a "Captcha" in place to register, we are better able to control it and appropriately respond when there is an issue.

Who gets to see my registration information? Is it secure?

We use your first name and the first initial of the last name you provide us to identify you as a Rockin Pets member; that information is made public. Your approximate location (generally within a few blocks) is used for searches to provide the distance between a pet owner and a potential pet sitter and to place an icon on a map near the sitter's location for visual reference. We don't know and don't want to know your exact address. Even if you adjust your location on the map tools to exactly reflect your address, we only show other members an approximate location. Your pet owner and pet sitter status and availability are of course integral to the operation of the sitter search directory and are made public by implication. Your password is maintained in an encrypted form that even WE can't decode: no one gets that. If you allow us to, we use your e-mail address to send you newsletters and service bulletins and alerts that you have requested. Nobody else sees or receives your email address, and we will never sell, rent, loan, or otherwise provide it to anybody else (unless they bring a court order). Whenever you enter passwords and other personal information they are protected by state of the art SSL encryption for security. You can see that happening by observing the lock icon in your browser's address bar whenever we are going to be transferring sensitive data.

What kinds of pets do your sitters take care of?

There is no limit to the kind of pets a Rockin Pets pet sitter might be willing or able to care for. Your sitter's Rockin Pets profile is the best place to look. Most sitters will be experienced at care for domestic household pets like cats, dogs, birds and fish. Finding qualified and experienced care for more exotic pets like reptiles and amphibians or larger or more specialized pets like horses may require some searching.

How can I find pet sitters in my local area?

Go to the Search for Sitters page under the My Account menu tab. From there, enter a city and state, a zip code, a country or any combination of those. Just entering your zip code is probably fastest and easiest. Now select how many sitters (at the most) you want to see and within what distance away from you. Click on the Search button and the results of your search will be displayed, both in tabular form and as map icons. Remember that for security purposes, map locations are approximate only, typically within a few blocks of the actual location. As a registered Rockin Pets member you can then send the prospective sitter a message asking about their availability, prices, experience, etc. Rockin Pets does not provide any further contact information about a sitter. It will need to come from them.

I registered as a pet sitter. Now how do I find a job? Why don’t I see anything in my jobs list?

Don’t think of your jobs list as a classified ad list that you have to search every day. That’s not how it works. On Rockin Pets, the jobs find you. Once you are registered and your information is in our system, a client in your own neighborhood can find you based on your location and the other information in your profile. He can then choose to contact you directly through the Rockin Pets message system to find out more about you and your experience and to see if you are interested in the job he needs done. From that point on the negotiations are between you and the client and will cover the scope of the job (what he needs done and how often he needs it), whether it is done at his location or yours, the pay, your references, etc. You are not committed to take every job you are contacted about. Some people only want to work with certain types of animals, can only work certain hours or certain days, and that’s fine. That is all part of the negotiation phase. Your jobs list is a reminder list for jobs you have been contacted about and might be considering, jobs you have accepted, and jobs that are completed and need feedback left.

How much do I get paid as a pet sitter?

Pet Sitters negotiate how much they will get paid directly with each client depending on the scope of work (what they need done and how often they need it), how much time it will take them, and how much they value their time based on thing like their experience, their references, etc. For example, if someone wants you to feed his dogs and walk and play with them twice a day, that takes a lot more time and is worth more than someone who wants you to take his hamster cage home with you and put in fresh food once a day. It is up to the sitter to evaluate how much their time is worth, how much effort the job is going to take, and negotiate their price directly with the client.

Why should I upgrade my account to Premium Level?

Upgrading your account gives you access to premium features. Primarily it gives you the ability to maintain a profile with information about you and your pets or about your pet care experience and qualifications. You can add pictures, write blogs, make friends and keep favorites, and unlike those other social networking sites- everyone here loves their pets as much as you do. By being a member of Rockin Pets, and meeting other people here, you know that you are associating with people who care about their pets; those are the kind of friends you want.

Another bonus for pet sitters - if you have Premium Membership, you will show up first on the pet sitter searches (within the specified search distance). Every little bit helps! The benefits of guest, standard, and premium membership are summarized in the table below:

How do I upgrade my account to premium level?

You can upgrade your account to premium (gold) level or extend your premium membership so it doesn't expire by using the "Subscribe" button on the Account Info-> Account Summary page under either the My Account menu tab. That page also has your current account status so you can see when your current premium membership expires. Clicking the Subscribe button takes you to a secure checkout page at PayPal where you may arrange for payment either through an existing PayPal account, your credit card, or you may even register a new PayPal account to use if you wish. Following your checkout with PayPal you are returned to the Account Summary page where your new membership status will be reflected.

Are the pet sitters employed by Rockin Pets?

No. All pet sitters (and any other pet care specialists that you find on the Rockin Pets site) are independent and not supported or employed by Rockin Pets in any way. When you make an agreement with anyone for pet care please remember that you are conducting business with that person as an individual. Rockin Pets has made their proximity information and previous users' feedback information available to you for use in your selection. We do not and cannot endorse any particular individual. You need to make your own choices and do your own homework to make sure the person you are hiring has the qualifications and experience to do the job for you.

Can anyone post a pet adoption ad?

Anyone who has a pet that needs a loving home. Rescue groups and anyone fostering pets are also welcome to post. BREEDERS, PET STORES AND OTHER COMMERCIAL SELLERS ARE EXPRESSLY PROHIBITED FROM POSTING.

Does Rockin Pets sell pets?

No, Rockin Pets only provides the connection for potential adopters to find pets who need new homes. Rockin Pets is not involved in any part of the adoption after the introduction in any way. Pet adoption ads are posted by individuals or rescue groups that are completely separate and unaffiliated with Rockin Pets. We do not endorse any particular ad over any other and do not check the validity of ads or their posters. As a potential pet adopter you will need to do your own fact finding to make sure offers are legitimate and the animals are what they are claimed to be.

Can anyone post a "Lost and Found" ad?

Registered members may post a "Lost and Found" ad. Anyone over 18 may register for free. You do not have to be a registered member to search through the "Lost and Found" ads.

Is it free to post a "Lost and Found" ad?

Yes, it is free to registered Rockin Pets members.

Can anyone post a pet memorial?

Yes, registered members may post a pet memorial. Anyone 18 or over may register for free. You do not have to be a registered member to look through the pet memorials.

Why should I upgrade my membership?

One of the benefits of an upgraded Rockin Pets membership is the ability to create an expanded personal profile. As a petsitter or commercial business, this allows you to more accurately and completely reflect your products, interests, abilities, capabilities, experience amd testimonials. As a pet owner you can share pictures, stories and information about your pets, your requirements, your pet's special needs or favorite things- anything you want. We all love our pets and this is a great way to show them off and tell the world how great they are. In addition, if your interests are in social networking, finding new friends with similar interests and keeping in contact with the friends you already have, what better way to do that than through the common denominator of a profound love for animals that each of us at Rockin Pets shares.

You also have an opportunity to publish more and longer blogs with pictures, and maintain more and larger photo albums for others to see, showcasing yourself, your pets, your family and your life!

Can I add pictures of my pets?

Basic members have a photo album where they can post pet pictures. Premium account members can include pictures of their pets in many of their profile sections, in blogs, and of course in their expanded photo albums.

What's the difference between a friend and a favorite?

Friends are other members for whom you have submitted a friend request and they have accepted (or they submitted one to you and you accepted). Your top friends are shown on your profile page, and all of your friends can be accessed from there.

Favorites are private and allow you to quickly access the profiles of other members that you use or visit often. You don't need someone to "accept" you before they are one of your favorites.

What is a blog and how does it work?

A blog (from the term "web log") is a public diary of sorts on your profile- a place where you can record your thoughts or feelings on a subject, your opinions on a product- anything you like really, and other members can read your current blog and access your previous blogs as well. The titles and links to your most recent blogs are available on your profile page, with full access to each of your blogs from there as well.

How do I report an obscene, abusive, or distasteful picture (or blog, profile, etc.)?

On each profile or info page, photo album page, blog page and message there is a small flag icon    gray flagflag    that you can click on to report abuse. You will be presented a menu allowing you to enter a few details about what you find obscene, abusive, or distasteful about the content, and Rockin Pets staff will be alerted to take a look. We don't allow anonymous complaints however. You must be a registered member and signed in to the web site to flag abuse. And you should know that inappropriate flagging is an abuse itself. Play nice.

I try to update my Live Feed by text but it doesn't work. What's happening?

Depending on the mobile phone company that provides your service, your phones may need to be "registered" to allow them to send text messages or pic-text picture messages to Rockin Pets Live Feed. It's quick and easy to register. You do it from here. If you send updates using both plain text messages and pic-text, you should register twice, once using each service because some mobile phone companies use different addresses for each service. On the My Account -> My Notifications page click on the button that says "Register a Phone ..." Then copy the 4 character code it gives you into a text message and text it to livefeed@rockinpets.org. You will get a confirmation text back that you are registered. Now, click the "Register a Phone ..." button again to get a new code and pic-text it to livefeed@rockinpets.org using your pic-text function this time. You get another confirmation text, and you are done! Simple! You can delete a registration or re-register anytime.

However, no actual PayPal account is necessary even though PayPal is our payment facilitator. If you choose, PayPal will take your payment directly by credit card for this transaction without ever opening a PayPal account. PayPal also has a facility for using electronic checks against your bank account if you wish. Please see the PayPal web site for details on how to use that feature. The amount of delay time is decided by your bank and PayPal. Rockin Pets only gets informed when the transaction is complete. Warning: If you don't have a PayPal account and pay with your credit card, PayPal will offer to use your information to start a PayPal account right then. You do NOT have to sign up with them. Your transaction is already paid at that point. If you don't want to start an account with them, use the link on their page to "Return to Rockin Pets".
